North American Semiconductor Equipment Industry Posts June 1999 Book-to-Bill Ratio of 1.24

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 21, 1999 -- The North American-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted a June 1999 Book-to-Bill ratio of 1.24, it was reported by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI). A book-to-bill of 1.24 means $124 in orders were received for each $100 worth of products shipped.

Three-month average of worldwide shipments in June 1999 was $1.2 billion. The figure is about even with the May 1999 level, and is eight percent below the June 1998 level of $1.3 billion. Three-month average bookings in June 1999 were $1.5 billion. The bookings figure is one percent below May 1999 yet is 55 percent above the June 1998 level of $933 million. Bookings in June 1999 rose to 89 percent of the previous cycle peak of $1.6 billion reached in November 1997.

"The June figures are consistent with industry analysts' projections for a slow and steady recovery in both the semiconductor chip and equipment industries," said Stanley Myers, president of SEMI. "Many analysts and attendees at SEMICON West last week supported this sentiment, expressing continued cautious optimism for a solid recovery into 2000."

The SEMI book-to-bill is a ratio of three-month moving average bookings to three-month moving average shipments for the North American semiconductor equipment industry. Shipments and bookings figures are in millions of U.S. dollars.
