I think we are overlooking the real purpose of the watermarking technology. I don't think the industry is too concerned about Joe Q Public recording music to have in their cars or give to friends. What the industry wants to prevent is the SELLING of copies.

If a company on the Net or even a local shop tries to SELL a copy of a musical recording, they had better be able to show that they PAID for that specific copy themselves. Hence the watermark- kind of like a serial number for tracking. Once you or I purchase it, we can record it for our own personal use if we want. But if we try to SELL it (in large quantity) and we get caught, the proof of piracy will get us in deep sh*t. Get it?
