I suspect they would. We just lost three fishermen at sea for three days. They didn't have a radio location device. They broke fuel line they couldn't repair and were drifting toward you. The were found by a CG plane, and picked up by a CG ship. The CG repaired their boat and brought it in. No big deal. It happens all the time. CG rescues Chinese fishing boats and sportsmen sailing balloons around the world for kicks.
The real question is if the Coast Guard efforts were extravagant or ordered for political reasons. Did the activities uselessly divert the CG from other important life-saving tasks? I do not deny that injured families may get better results if they raise hell and ring every political bell. I am not ready to criticize the CG until there is some fact to show they did something wrong. I haven't seen anything yet.
