Compaq global advertising VP quits- newsletter

PARIS, July 22 (Reuters) - Andrew Salzman, vice-president for worldwide advertising and brand strategy at Compaq Computer Corp (NYSE:CPQ - news), has resigned his job, a daily French advertising industry newsletter said on Thursday.

A spokeswoman at Compaq France was unable to confirm the report. No one was immediately available to comment at Compaq Europe, Middle East and Africa's Munich headquarters.

Compaq, the world's biggest PC maker whose chief executive and finance director resigned in April, last month warned of second quarter losses and put in place a restructuring plan.

On Tuesday CBNC television said Compaq was ready to name Peter Hellman, former president and CEO of auto parts and defence firm TRW Inc (NYSE:TRW - news), as its new chief executive when it reports earnings on July 28.

Strategies Newsletter, citing U.S. specialist publication Adweek, said Salzman's resignation comes as Compaq is putting its advertising agency, Omnicom Group Inc's (NYSE:OMC - news) DDB, under pressure for not doing as well as WPP Group Plc's (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: WPP.L) Ogilvy & Mather for IBM Corp (NYSE:IBM - news).

''Keith Reinhard, chief executive officer of DDB Worldwide, has met Compaq's chairman Ben Rosen several times in the last few weeks. For Keith Reinhard, Andrew Salzman's departure does not affect the agency network's relationship with its client,'' the newsletter said.

Compaq hired DDB, which handled advertising for Digital Equipment Corp, in June last year just after buying Digital, and charged DDB with running its first global branding campaign.

Compaq's ad account, put at $300 million by advertising industry publications, had been held by Interpublic's (NYSE:IPG - news) Ammirati Puris Lintas.
