Amazon loss widens, but revenue surges

SEATTLE - Earnings were down but revenue was up for the Internet's
largest retailer in the second quarter. Amazon.com says its quarterly loss
grew to $138.0 million, or 86 cents a share, compared to $22.6 million, or
15 cents, a year earlier, as the company spent heavily to promote and
expand its Web site. Amazon says revenue for the same period rose to
$314.4 million from $116 million. Amazon also says it will split its stock
