Bosco-

When Clinton kow -er went to Beijing last year, he distanced the US from Taiwan and went further down the road than any president before in terms of placing the US on record as supporting "one China". I can't readily come up with exact quotes, but I don't think that is disputable.

As for my resorting to the WSJ editorial, I would point out the following. Steven opined that "the only conclusion" he could come up with was his preferred- one might even be tempted to say pre-ordained- one (ie. "that Lee was reacting to and attempting to encourage the anti-Chinese climate which now exists in Washington DC"). He struck me as epitomizing thinking solely within one's own paradigm. In as convenient a way to me as possible, I wanted to point out to him there were other possible explanations: I was not particularly trying to convince him of the WSJ POV. I find I am usually suspicious of people's intimate understanding of other people's motives, particularly when they do not even know the people involved.

I do think Occam's Razor would suggest WSJ's theory is probably a closer approximation to the truth than Steven's, and if I've left you a little befuddled I am not-so-secretly pleased. SI should be good for a few yucks!

Meanwhile, lest anyone think I have become too chummy and gone squishy soft, I offer this as further evidence of unsatisfactory nature of the current regime in Beijing that maintains its power by the barrel of a gun:
