There are some large companies that are certainly concerned by Iomega's advance into their domain. There is nothing wrong with one company using cash to hire an investment firm to short another. This activity does not need to be reported to shareholders if done in reasonable lots. Just a way of doing business these days - short your smaller competition. The shear number of shorts on Iomega at the consistent level would indicate that the shorting is being done by organizations with a gripe. It certainly isn't being carried out by a few negative internet commentators.

It is my personal belief is that 3M purposfully drug their feet on the LS120 technology introduction for four long years (they were working together with OR Technology, Iomega, and Matsushita) in order to squeeze the smaller player out, i.e., Iomega, which owned the technology. 3M got their way eventually, with Iomega capitulating to their demands and selling the LS120 technology to them. What 3M didn't count on was Iomega developing a secondary technology, the Zip, and booming ahead with it in the market. They did not consider Iomega capable of this task. They've been proven wrong however. Now, Imation, the spinoff, has little good to say about Iomega and the Zip drive. Amounts to company bashing.

The world of big business is getting to be more and more like politics.
