I disagree. There's been a huge amount of change in China within the last decade, it's just happened in the background, away from the Western news cameras.

Don't get me wrong--I'm by no means an apologist for the Chinese regime--but you'll find much more open media and markets and much more tolerance for dissent now than, say, immediately post-T. Square.

There's a bit of a paradox here, too. A completely closed regime is able to mostly avoid international pressure by keeping its dirty secrets hidden. More openness means more criticism, even though the situation is actually better. Compare China and North Korea, for instance.
