Germany to test modified grapes
July 22, 1999

BONN -- Germany, usually firmly opposed to
genetically engineered food, is to allow wine growers to
plant genetically modified grapes for the first time but only
on an experimental basis.

The health ministry's Robert Koch Institute said that it
would allow two southern vineyards to plant a total of
20,000 genetically modified vines as part of a 10-year
experiment.

The agency said the grapes, which will be modified to
make them more resistant to harmful bacteria, are strictly
for research use and cannot be sold to the public.

The Riesling grapes will be planted in two areas, near the
town of Wuerzburg and in the state of
Rhineland-Palatinate.

Germany is one of the world's leading producers of wine.
Its Rhine and Moselle River regions are known around
the world for the high quality of their white wines.

Germany, which has campaigned against imports to
Europe of genetically engineered corn and other products
from the United States, recently called on the European
Union to create a central agency for authorising
genetically modified organisms.

It also allows test planting of some other modified crops.
