Thread,

Good article in NY Times about success of NY's E-Z Pass Electronic Toll Collection System. nytimes.com
Unfortunately the contractor was Lockheed-Martin (LMT) and not Amtech. New Jersey has chosen a division of Worldcom's (WCOM) MFS, although Lockheed is disputing the award. Eventually, all the interstates will probably have such intelligent transport systems (ITS) ettm.com

The question is: Which ITS investors are going to get rich?
These state contracts are high stakes poker games. Lockheed and MFS both have alot of experience with fiber communication systems. They also have much more experience at contracting with governmental agencies and certainly have bigger expense accounts for wining and dining state officials, etc. Is there really room for a small operator like AMTS here? What advantages does its small relative size afford it?

What about playing the game from the fiber side? Corning (GLW) and Lucent (LU) dominate the business and its applications are certainly not limited to ITS. Both are also active in expanding their optical component businesses. A very exciting emerging market is Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) which permits much higher bandwidth from a given strand of fiber.

In offering this menu of opportunities, I am not trying to discourage anyone from Amtech, which seems to be entering a strong support zone at these price levels. I simply wish someone could help educate me on what particular competitive advantages this small company has or why it is a compelling bargain vis-a-vis the other companies mentioned.
