...and the nature of the computer market is one where the prices of mainstream pcs are dropping at a rapid rate to $0 ...

Burgoo,

There is no such thing as a FREE PC. Somewhere along the line SOMEONE must pay for it. If you look at any of the free PC ads, there are ALWAYS strings attached. Those strings have COSTS. These COSTS must be PAID by the BUYER. So how do you or anyone figure they are FREE? Please explain.

Further, the so called free PC is always a minimal configuration using the cheapest components available. The type of consumer attracted to them is usually a first time user. Anyone who has worked at any kind of help desk will tell you this is the most difficult type of customer to support. Support costs and customer frustration are going to be high. Who is going to pay for those support costs? The buyer again. More cost.

I can hardly wait to start reading about all the horror stories 6 months from now. IMO this makes the free PC much different from the free cell phone market. Mainstream PC buyers are not going to bother with it let alone the business buyer. It will remain a niche market at best.

Plese check out the following:

... and good luck with your free PC.
