CL680 integrates NTSC/PAL video encoder but fails to include many other key functions such as audio DAC, audio ADC(if you want to record), remote control, audio cancellation (if you want to play KaraOke and sing along)..... In short, CL680 is NOT a single chip solution, it still need an audio DAC and so on.

ESS, on the other hand, recognizes the trade-off between mixed IC and pure logic IC and decides to integrate the rest onto a companion chip. I personally think this is a much better partitioning. You will hear from Chinese VCD customers pretty soon as to which solution they like better.
