To all,
A reason why I am frequently disgusted with CNBC (among others) is the homogeneity of cable news. Can anyone honestly tell me any tangible differences in reporting between CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox, etc.? Since no network is "unique", they end up competing on the basis of "quantity" rather than "quality" of news.
To offer an olive branch of non-partisanship, I refer to saturation coverage of Monica, George W., O.J., JFK Jr., etc. The prevailing news motto seems to be: If you can't be first, be there the most often. In other words, what's wrong with... "we have a report that JFK Jr. is missing and believed dead. Stay with CNBC for more details on this breaking story. Back to our regular programming."
My questions to Ted (knowing he is probably not the appropriate respondent, but acknowledging that he is one helluva lot closer to the inside of the news biz than I), does CNBC think that their coverage of JFK, Jr. was BETTER than CNNs coverage? And finally, who/what determines which issues will require saturation coverage?
Again, thanks to Ted for participating in this thread. Let's learn from his talent and experience, rather than offend him into ignoring us. |
