********OT*************
China could not even make a nail in 1949, believe it or not, virtually had no industry except some textile factories in Shanghai. And making A-bomb had only become a high priority since the ex-Soviet withdrew all their experts in 1961<? maybe the year was wrong>. And in 1964 China had A-bomb. Maybe for you this is "many years", but for me, I think it was pretty fast.

Well, China is a big, populous, poor country. The per capita natural resources are very limited. So some people in countryside (those boat people you called) are still very poor. And they were told by those smugglers that the jobs are very easy to find, and they can be rich in no time in the US, so they just believed, and sold themselves to those smugglers. If you want to blame these solely on the Chinese gov., feel free to do so. However, it is not true.

China has 23% of the world population, and 7% of the world arable land (comparing to the US has 5% pop. and 25% of the world arable land). It is a big challenge for the gov. just to feed everybody, not to mention to improve their living standard. If you read those 2000+ years of Chinese history, every time during a civil war or natural disaster, there were millions of Chinese dead. That is why now you have Chinese emmigrants everywhere in the world. Boat people are not a new phenomenon to the current Chinese regime. It has a long long history in China. The same story goes with female girl infantcide. The Western media just makes it sound like these things only existed under the current regime, which is absolutely not true.

Well, I guess I really waste too much time. Most of people wear some bias glasses when they look at China, and the sad thing is they don't realize it, and they think they are so objective.
