Is an ISP a good investment in the first place? I notice that virtually all the ISP stocks are reporting losses. That would be ok if I were comfortable that this was simply the result of a high initial cost of building a customer base, but when I look further I have to wonder. This seems to be an easy-to-enter business, as evidenced by the very large number of ISPs. I see that it is also consolidating, but even after it is consolidated, what is to prevent one ISP from trying to steal away the customers from other IPSs? For most, there is no switching barrier. If any ISP was making much money, another with similar costs could cut the price and pull away the customers. I see that if you were providing some unique and proprietary content, your customers should stick around. And I see that business customers will be less likely to switch than consumers. But isn't the fundamental business model of an ISP pretty shaky? Why not avoid them based on poor long-term fundamentals?
