greeting all,
some interesting stuff from the last cc (rough transcription)...
much of the conference call was about silicon (rightly so), the tone was upbeat and confident: production of the chip is on track .. and sounds like it is going to be very good :
"we keep talking about the cost reduction of the new adsl chipset... but it is not only cost reduction it is also performance... until now with our current product we were always the leading company in technology in all the tenders that we participated in... we actually lead the technology table (?) in the performance of the product in all our activities..
the new product with the new chipset has better performance..this better performance means that a telephone company can cover more customers from the central office with this new product.. so this ensures that with the new product we are going to keep our competitive edge... relative to our competitors... so the new product with the new chipset its not only cost reduction and integration its also a competitive edge and a better product..." and
"without being too technical... i think that the major advantage of this chipset relative to other chipsets that are in the market is the fact that it is a complete integrated chipset: analog and digital on the same chip... this is a great challenge in technology that some companies fail to do... we have been able to do it together with fujitsu.. the fact that this is an integrated chip gives you an advantage in power consumption... and concentration of the product which translated into cost... on the top of it... this chipset has better performance than the other chipsets on the market.. better performance means for example that you can reach longer distance on the copper with this chipset... longer distance means that the telephone companies can sell more customers than with the previous product or with a specific number of customers they can enhance the service... for example instead of providing 1 Mbps, they can provide 4 Mbps... i think these are the two main advantages of the chipset... "
and thought this part held some promise:
"one thing that i can elaborate on it is adsl over isdn.. as you know in europe there is a big requirement to deliver adsl and isdn on the same line ... once you do it you sacrifice the performance in 20 or 30% .. in other words... the reach, the distance that you can get with standard adsl relative to the distance that you can get with adsl and isdn is about 20 or 30% less.. with the new chipset we put a lot of emphasis on improving the performance with isdn, so the degradation for isdn and adsl delivery are much less and which give us a competitive edge in europe for customers that needs adsl and isdn and this is basically most of europe..."

next gen silicon sounds great.. also interesting that schedule/planning calls for new chipset every year:
"regarding the next roadmap(?) on the chipset development.. not only (do) we intend to develop multiple port, we are actually in a very advanced stage of development of the multiport chipset... we started immediately... let me elaborate on it a little bit.. the sequence of development between orckit and fujitsu microelectronics is that we developed the digital part.. when we developed the digital part and provided it to fujitsu microelectronics .. for integration and operation for manufacturing .. we finished the digital part of the keywave last september... immediately when we finished it, we started a new chip that will have four adsl modems, heavy adsl modems, on one chip... and multiple g.lite on the same chip... so in other words this is going to be a dual purpose chip .. 4 quad adsl or octet g.lite.. this chip is developed together with fujitsu microelectronics as well... and the technology is going to be .18 micron relative to .35 micron which is the current chip... i think that this chip will be available at the beginning of next year... so we are talking about 6 or 9 months from now... so we will have better performance... higher concentration.. much lower cost and this is the next step... and in this market we believe that every year we will come with a new chipset and with new line of product that will have higher concentration and better performance... "
also am thinking there might be a next gen cpe chip to go with the quad/octet, but no mention... ---
apparently orct has a couple of wins with clecs/independents (with fujitsu) which they aren't publishing because volume shipments haven't begun.. (this went by very quickly and wasn't followed up on):
"on the top of the rboc... and the position of the second supplier, there are all the independent companies and the clecs.. as i mentioned before we participate there... also in the market of the independent carriers that have a few 100's of 1000's(?) lines each of them... or the clecs which are renting or leasing the lines from the rbocs... in both cases we participate with fujitsu ... it is a part of the big deal that fujitsu is selling their equipment: sonet and others together with adsl..
i don't know, we didn't lose anything... we actually won two accounts, that they are not material so we don't publish them at this stage until we start to ship major volume to them..."
