Gateway says not in talks for ISP acquisition

LOS ANGELES, July 22 (Reuters) - Computer seller Gateway Inc (NYSE:GTW - news). is not now in talks to acquire a major Internet service provider, the company's Chief Financial Officer John Todd said on Thursday.

''We are currently not in discussions with any major ISP,'' Todd told Reuters in a telephone interview. ''We are not in discussions for an acquisition of an ISP.''

Talk has swirled in the markets for the last month that Gateway could be interested in buying an Internet service provider such as EarthLink Networks Inc. (Nasdaq:ELNK - news) or MindSpring Enterprises Inc. (Nasdaq:MSPG - news).

Todd said Gateway was pleased with the performance of its own Internet access service, Gateway.net, noting that membership had doubled to 400,000 in the latest quarter, making it one of the fastest-growing ISPs in the country.

''We are demonstrating that we are a significant Internet player,'' Todd said.

Gateway said on Thursday that income from its non-PC business accounted for more than 10 percent of its total, putting its plans to diversify beyond its core computer selling operations ahead of target.

The San Diego, Calif.-based company said profits for the three months ended June 30 rose to 56 cents a share from 38 cents a year ago. That beat Wall Street consensus forecasts of 55 cents a share as compiled by First Call Corp.
