Hi Mephisto- SUNW still has to address how they are going to hook JINI into all of those Win NT boxes. They need to develop a solution where their boxes (set top boxes and JINI devises) will easily integrate with all those WIN devises. SUNW does not need to compete with WIN NT head to head but in 2001 when JINI devises become an option for the end-user, it is critical that they configure with ANY WIN product.

SUNW will need to address this issue now or latter. My opinion (if the resources are available) is to address it now AND latter with end-user options that provide for easy work-arounds and intelligent solutions.

Why should the end-user own a set-top box AND a WIN PC connected to the network, when one or the other will provide the necessary JINI connection. SUNW needs to attack on both fronts with exciting solutions that work in any network environment.

Sunw has an excellent lead in the high end server Internet environment but in the future they need to evaluate the end-user needs too. If they have a plan that provides the end-user requirement (ie. set top boxes or WIN compatible devises) they will continue to grow their business.

If you look forward to 2001, both SUNW and MSFT will be providing software solutions to the end-user. Let's hope that SUNW provides more exciting options that will drive end-user demand for more new products and devises.
