It's not an issue of "compensation", it's just a fact of life. If I died tomorrow, a few people would mourn, most wouldn't care. If somebody tried to make my death out to be a tragedy of mythic proportion, that would be absurd, and some people would doubtless laugh, less at me than at the people who were trying to pretend that I was something I was clearly not.

It becomes a bit of a paradox. I would prefer to ignore the whole thing: I didn't know them, and they meant more to me than any other person who died that day. But when bombarded with news of an event which ought to be of no significance to anyone beyond the immediate circle, it becomes impossible not to have a reaction. My reaction is that the whole reaction to the event is ridiculous, stupid, laughable, and indicative of one of the more primitive human tendencies. That is less dismissive of the people who died than it is dismissive of the people who are mourning them as if they were some sort of national treasures.
