I expect all these 'fake' press releases are going to trigger a rather significant response from the powers that be. Good.

There are all kinds of fraud out there. This thread has been inundated by one brand of fraud for about a year now which happens to be acceptable to many, no doubt under a philosophy of "the ends justifies the means" something like this: "if you think someone else is telling lies, then it is ok for you to tell lies in order to discredit them."

That, of course, is insane. But as long as that kind of craziness exists in a closed system (this thread is an example of what I mean by "closed system"), there is really not much incentive for anyone to put a stop to it. Especially if it is attracting readers and therefore having a positive impact on the bottom line.

But now the internet vandals, the insane and the merely foolish are involving participants outside of the closed system -- Business Wire would be one example.

One can argue (and many are arguing) the merits of individual cases and instances of this kind of behavior. Some who are involved claim very high motives for their actions -- that their ends justify whatever means they employ. Other arguments are based on points of law. Fascinating stuff.

My Father is a retired fireman. He has participated in controlled burns in which a small amount of brush was purposely burned in order to reduce the chance of a larger fire in the future. He agrees with me: Regardless of anything else, including high ideals and good purposes, those who play with fire should not be surprised if they get burned by that fire.

There is something to be said for minding one's own business.
