I thought the shuttle jokes were wrong too...I think that there is a generally tone of sophisticated flippancy that the educated feel compelled to adopt, to show that they are not suckers, and do not take anything too seriously. This combines with the common, and childish, love of grossout humor, to produce jokes like this. I do not, as yet, see it as cathartic, although I will think about it, in fairness. I think it is a false air of superiority...
