Sid, Remember when you were bashing Ballard for problems with prototypes? Now CH4 is doing the same thing. Let me say that prototypes are created to produce problems that can then be solved. That's what they're for.

To attempt to make an erroneous point that prototype difficulties reflect poorly on future commercialization, CH4 states: "Another American company M C Power demonstrated a 250 kilowatt unit in San Diego a year later in 1997 it only managed to produce 160 megawatt hours of power before being shut down for repairs."

It was a prototype. It did its job. It demonstrated where improvements were necessary to design a commercial unit.

MC Power's 250 kW MCFC at the Marine Corp Air Station in Miramar encountered shaft seal problems with the blower. Because of this, the blower did not attain the required pressure. That was part of the reason for the shortfall as I understand it. The turbocharger also failed several times. They also identified inverter problems and improved the design for the next trial with a 75 kW stack.

Looks like competent research to me. More power to them!
