W.House mulls ways to use IMF gold
for debt relief

WASHINGTON, July 23 (Reuters) - Faced with Congressional
opposition to gold sales, the White House is looking at different
ways to use IMF gold reserves to fund a program of debt relief,
Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers said Friday.

''We are looking at various alternatives with respect to mobilizing
IMF resources to address (poor country debt relief), which is a
very important priority for us,'' Summers told reporters.

A senior Treasury official said on Thursday that the Clinton administration was looking at alternative
ways to mobilize the International Monetary Fund's gold reserves to pay for debt relief. But he also
said selling IMF gold was the only ''viable option'' so far with broad international support.
