The one he referred to has 6 D-batteries. Mine requires 4 D-batteries. I got mine on sale for about $29.
Apparently Coleman has come out with new lanterns. I'm reading the label still on mine: "BRIGHTEST fluorescent lantern available."
These lanterns are really bright. I don't like the harsh white/blue lights though. But, they're great for tasks (i.e., cooking, reading, etc.) They really do put out a LOT of light, and could do a pretty good job of lighting a small room. [You feel like you're in the basement or garage though.] Also decided to get an extra skylight in the kitchen.
I'm going to use the Coleman battery lanterns for tasks ... and will use EVEREADY "Utility Area Lanterns" (6-volt batteries) for general lighting. Has a much softer feel. Doesn't put out as much light, but is more than adequate. Plus they're small enough that you can carry them all over the place.
As I mentioned before - I'm gonna do the "girl thing" and find something nice to sit them in.
The guy I bought the house from had 6 Tiffany-type lamps hanging from the ceiling. I kept only two. Fortunately I didn't sell the others yet. I'm gonna see if I can improvise and soften the lighting from the Coleman's, by improvising and using those Tiffany shades in conjunction. If not - I'm gonna go to Cost Plus or Pier One and see if they have those Japanese rice paper shades. I'll try those.
I hope things aren't bad. But, if they are ... I don't want to feel like I'm in a bunker.
Already had a chance to use the lanterns. A couple of weeks ago there was a brief power outage. It was the first time that I didn't have to go around collecting candles from different rooms. In downtown (and near-downtown) Houston, we'd always have several power outages each year.
This was the first time that I could actually see - to do something - during a power outage. So, regardless of Y2K ... I feel I've already gotten my money's worth.
It's kind like those private airline clubs. I used to travel 3-4 months per year. Mostly Continental. Had/have Continental President's Club membership. Don't travel much these days, but still keep membership. All you need is one flight that's delayed for hours on end ... to appreciate the value of that membership.
