GeneChip™ expression probe arrays facilitate genomics research by allowing both qualitative and quantitative analyses of expression profiles. Because tens of thousands of oligonucleotide probes can be synthesized on a single array, thousands of mRNA transcripts can be evaluated simultaneously. By using multiple probes for each gene, the effects of non-specific hybridization and background signal are minimized so that low-intensity hybridization patterns from mRNA transcripts can be sensitively and accurately measured. It is possible to identify expression level changes of greater than two to three-fold between samples and to detect mRNA transcripts present at an abundance level of only a few copies per cell. Applications of this technology include the identification and validation of novel drug targets, elucidation of cellular pathways and other biological assays.
