Mike,

The SCM is still there at the core. The SMART acquisition allows them to provide a more complete solution. They're adding a front end to a solution that previously wouldn't interface with the customer.

The goal is still to manage as efficient supply chain as possible, but the distinction now is that they're enabling the e-commerce engine to link from the customer's order in real time into inventory, look into suppliers, and determine timely delivery. The "trading community" discussion in the conference call gives a glimpse into where they're going by adding a front end. If that goes over, we would indeed be well on the way to having a software powerhouse with SCM as a crucial component. Other vendors apparently cannot touch the supply chain functionality of i2. The gorilla component of the i2 story is very much there. The "lock in" would appear to be high as entire supply chains tie into the ITWO product.

The company is still on the same path, but optimizing production at a plant or series of plants for one company is a centrally managed task. Optimizing an entire supply chain of multiple companies is another that requires the interaction provided by a front end. (reference the "trading cummunities" again from the conf call). I think Sanjiv has taken up talking in terms of "e-business solutions" because he wants the company to be seen as a broader based solution provider. I think an analyst actually called in and asked Sanjiv if they could break out SCM from e-business and Sanjiv said it really can't be done because the solution is a melding of the two into a workable whole.

Welp, i must go now. This is all very much IMHO. I didn't mean to imply that i2 had abandoned SCM. Just that the solution provided is evolving considerably. Their core competency in SCM is still being leveraged.

Please post your comments when you listen to the CC. We'd like to hear your views. good luck.

Shane
