I thought that Matrix was excellent, and probably would prefer it to Bladerunner (oh no, disrespect for a sacred cow...)...The special effects are wonderfully bizarre, the premise is a good teaser (some find it ridiculous, or too philosophically portentous, but it is a skillfully Gothic rendering of our fears about our own machines, and is less goofy a reference to Eastern mysticism than The Force), Keanu Reeves is very well used (the qualities for which Bertolucci chose him in Little Buddha, better deployed), Wesley Snipes and Joe Pantolioni always deliver (remember Joe as the manager in Eddie and the Cruisers, and the bail bondsman in Midnight Run?), and Carey Moss is the coolest female agent since La Femme Nikita, maybe cooler. Also, the bad guys are dark bureaucrats, the IRS auditors of our nightmares...Let me know how you like it! |
