I believe that we were properly leery of taking on responsibility for the political future of every country with which we were allied. We were a good deal less leery of taking on responsibility when we overthrew an elected ruler in Iran and replaced him with a despot, or when we sanctioned Marcos' declaration of martial law, or... (the list is a long one, especially if we bring Latin America into the picture). We don't mind meddling, but when it comes time to deal with the messes our meddling helps to produced, suddenly it would be wrong for us to interfere in internal affairs. I find that attitude to be a bit hypocritical.
