To JohnG: Thoughtful post on G* - but then I often agree, so think most of yours are "thoughtful". :-)

On G*. Have followed the Q, LOR, and G* for a few years now. Much of what you say re G* is very perceptive IMO. G* is a very high risk, potentially high gain investment. We are very very close to finding out how it will work "in the event" as the jargon goes.

The Sept system launch will no doubt have glitches and problems. Anything this innovative and risky will. But then what?

The fall will be growing pains time IMO. Handset shortages and other bad stuff may be problems to deal with. Service providers may fumble. Coverage will be spotty - and incomplete for sure.

But by calendar 2000 will a successful system be in place? Based upon my info, analysis and guess, the odds are good.

If the G* system flies, it is a potential cash cow for Loral and a major business opportunity for the Q.

Look forward to 1st quarter of cal. 2000 re the G*

Would be comfortable with a purchase now, but no need since already have stake.

BTW Loral is a more conservative (perhaps) way to participate in the G* 's potential success, since Loral has many opportunities in data with a stake in several stationary satellites up and to be launched whose primary use will be for data (broadly defined to include news transmission and video) - as well as the voice and very limited data capabilities of the G*

Loral owns about 42% of G* while the Q owns about 6% if I remember correctly.

All just IMO and no way investment advice. Anyone would be crazy not to do own due diligence on a risk like G* - again IMO.
