P.S. Sorry you got this whole essay. This is not directed to you personally ... I guess I got off on a tangent.
You don't have to apologize Cheryl.
I think I know where you are coming from after all of these years of knowing you. And many of your suspicions may indeed prove accurate if we are being deceived by corporate and governmental interests. But then again, the possibility is that nothing significant to our direct lives occurs and we'll all be breathing a huge sigh of relief.
I'm just more fatalistic about it all, I guess, having gotten over the panic mode sometime last year. But I still engage in Y2k centered discussions and preparations are commonly discussed.
But I have found that it is just easier to motivate people into thinking and doing something about preparing if I compare Y2K to some other form of natural disaster that could strike at any time rather than the potential end of civilization.
Again, so much of this the outcome depends upon how individuals react, not so much the technical glitches themselves.
I'm prepared for more than 3-months disruption. But many, can't do what I've done. Many are unwilling or not able to do what I've done - even if they wanted to.
Most don't see the need for even a week of individual preparation. This is what's sad, and what frightens me the most.
Yep... and it would be the same situation were people living in a flood plain or earthquake zone. How many people do you think have prepared themselves for the expected 8.5 scale earthquake expected along the New Madrid fault in Missouri?? Not too many.
And Cheryl, that's what I've always enjoyed about your posts. I know the level of preparations you've gone to. And you've never, in my memory, tried to tell someone else how screwed up they are because they are not doing as much as you have. You say your piece, put the information out there, and let others act or ignore what you say.
It's on the reader, not the writer to take action.
Take care Cheryl, Have a good weekend.
