Neocon, it seems to me that to be considered "scientific," "scholarly," "objective," or whatever, a descriptive definition should not reveal the describer's own "bias." When you counterpose respect (for property rights) and the attempt to attack (inherited wealth through politics), you make it clear to me which "side" you are on (as if I didn't already know <g>). In that sense, your definition is self-serving.

Here is an example of one that is not. It comes from the executive summary of a 1981 Cato Institute Policy Analysis, entitled: "An Alternative Analysis of Mass Belief Systems: Liberal, Conservative, Populist, and Libertarian":

The liberal supports government economic intervention and the expansion of individual liberties; the conservative opposes both. The libertarian supports expanded individual liberties but opposes economic intervention. The populist supports economic intervention but opposes expansion of individual liberties.

That may not be comprehensive enough; it may not even be accurate enough; but it is value-neutral.
