Prashant,

100Hot says it uses a proprietary method of measuring traffic by tabulating data from (undisclosed) 'cache servers' at major internet hubs. (That may be a bit off but close enough.)

Media Metrix, Neilsen and I believe PCDataOnline (pcdataonline.com) all use a method resembling the TV-ratings method of having "Neilsen boxes" wired up to a cross-section of users' computers.

The methodologies are obviously quite rough, but looking at a few different ratings gives us a pretty good sense of where sites stand.

It's also tough keeping up with things as so many acquisitions are taking place.

I think these ratings just accelerate the pace of acquisitions. I mean, look at Andover.net buying up Slashdot.org. Slashdot was like 43 on the 100Hot ranking - hard to stay independent for long with that kind of success. The acquirer, Andover, actually had a lower ranking for its whole suite of publications prior to the acquisition.
