A good friend of mine was a high exec in the CIA during the Reagan years and met with Reagan personally and frequently. He is a very bright man and competent man (now owns a company which teaches investigatory, read legal spying, technicques to companies all over the world, spends about half his time in the air, to Europe. Asia, all over the U.S.). I know him well from serving on serveral boards with him. He says that the real Reagan was very astute, very much on top of things, but fostered an aura of semi-bumbling avuncularity partly for its popularity and partly as a shield against aggressive reporters. A sort of presidential Columbo.
