I really believed that a true evolution in computing would be to distill servers down to what they were intended to do; provide a shared persistent storage facility to clients. This however is the complete opposite of the supposed "trend" toward Fat Server/Thin Client. To me that metaphor has failed several times already and is not much better than the old days of dumb terminals. Amazingly Sun's own experience with thin client (dubbed Auto Client) failed yet they are still pushing this stuff. Money is the driving force since that's where their margins are; big iron.
