Hi, nuke, good to "see" you: I saw Eyes Wide Shut this afternoon, and it is a masterpiece. The set design and cinematography alone are brilliant, but the actors are given room to draw out amazingly intense and intimate performances, and even many of the smaller roles make big impressions. The directing is stately, deliberate, and in keeping with the quasi- surrealism of the main line of action. The sexuality of the movie, while pervasive, has been exaggerated, and even the orgy is comparatively tame and "arty", in keeping with the stylization of the dream-like portion of the film, and the focus on reactions. Thematically, it is about the dangers of intimacy, of the insistence upon knowing everything and the need to feel absolutely secure. It is about the chasm opened when we decide upon "adventure", and the risk we put ourselves and loved one's through. It is about the strength and goodness of marriage and family, finally, and the foolish way in which we take them for granted...
