Some companies are already building wireless data applications on top of the short messaging service. Check out monkeymail.com , they have it set up so that you can read your e-mail from your wireless phone. You request your e-mail by dialing a phone number they provide. When they receive the call, they read the ANI and note your phone number. They then go grab a copy of your e-mail from your POP server and send it to you via the short messaging system.

I've been working on some software to provide stock quotes via a similar service. My understanding (from speaking to people who talk to the carriers) is that of all the carrier in the US, SprintPCS is by far the most interested in wireless data.
