"You don't say", said the blind man to his deaf wife, as his thirteen crippled children hobbled into the room. There by the broken fireplace was their lame dog 'Stumpy' snuggled up to next to 'creakers' their ancient cat.
Uncle Horace was frantically trying to catch the blind mans attention for he was headed right for the hammer and saw, but his thorax had been taken out last year and he was unable to speak a word of warning.
The blind man stumbled, sure enough, "I see" he said with hindsight for he should have remembered he had put the tools there last night. Uncle Horace helped the father to his feet.
Gratefully, the children sat at the table as grace was said, and the porridge was poured into waiting bowls. The family knew their situation looked bleak to many others who knew them, but love abounded in this house, and where words were not heard -loving caresses, pats on the back, and tweaks on the butts of brothers and sisters spoke volumes of the togetherness of family. The times were hard, but they lived within their means. Teamwork and fellowship made a pile of sticks a clubhouse, and Ma & Pa, and uncle Horace made all the strained and tawdry ends..........just meet.
