Mike,

Have you checked out the GoTo tools for advertisers? You should check out the Search Term Suggestion List. This way you can find more active search terms and bid on them too. For my web site, I find that being #12 on "water" and paying $.08 for the clickthrus is worth it. On the other hand, my site, hiosilver.com is listed #1 under "oxygen" and I only pay $.01 for those clickthrus. Either way, it is a much better deal than banner ads. I do work on the "free" search engine placements, but guess what: They are only free if you do it yourself and you place no value on your time. To get good placement (top 20), you need to work at it. And, it is different for each search engine. And when you optimize for one search engine, then you find that you may be "spamming" according to another search engine's rules.

Bottom line: GoTo is a great place to be for anyone with a commercial web site. And commercial web sites will be glad to pay for the privelege, especially when you only pay for maximum targeted (by definition) click thrus.

The news about AltaVista dropping out of paid placements is great. It will tend to discourage other engines from even trying it. I like the niche that GoTo has. I really like being a searcher when I want to buy something. The listings are by the sites that you really want to check out.
