Dick,

Modulation/demodulation is still done on the ISP side even though the
PCM/analog conversion is not. Think about it. The data that arrives
at your PC from the ISP is a modulated signal. The "digital modem"
on the ISP side is what does the modulation. The difference is that
the serial data is converted directly into PCM data. The PCM data
represents a modulated frequency just like an analog signal does.

As far as this being a USRX thread, I'm well aware of that. Right
this minute thousands of USR modems are dialed into Ascend MAXs.
This is called interoperability, and it will exist in the future with
56K connections as well. USR dominates the modem market, as Ascend
does the the RAS market. If you want to talk about modern equipment,
let's talk about MAX TNT vs. USR ???
