I would guess that of the 1000 companies listed many are now inoperative?

As for tying gold in reserves to GDP etc., first I think you're setting up a straw man - I don't think there has been any link for decades, second you are using an arbitrary figure of 5% - again a meaningless figure since there is no link anyway. If there was a link there would be some symetry within countries. Go back to the concept that gold is the only true reserve asset - i.e. the only one which is not another country's IOU. d
