We will find out tomorrow about July short interest as of July 12 trade date, July 15 settlement date. Anyone care to make predictions?

I say the reported number tomorrow is at least another million shares lower than last month. Remember that this number will be a couple weeks out of date when it is released. I think that the run to 117 1/2 brought in a LOT more shorts so I would guess that we are actually back to at least where we were last month if not higher. But we just can't know! Why? Because they will only report this information once per month, and 2 weeks out of date at that. It is a nice historical indicator I guess.

<soapbox-OT> The SEC should mandate that short interest be reported daily for all NYSE and NNM issues. It can and should be done this way. Current computers and networks can easily accomplish this. They say it is "such a big job" - it could all be virtually completely automated. I say the short interest should be reported daily and be out by 7pm every trading day (later when market hours are extended-if they are extended). </soapbox-OT>
