The common understanding of self proclaimed Internet officionadoes seems to be that the Amazons of the web will decimate 'obsolete traditional business'. Nothing could be further from the truth. For one thing, business-to-business and biz-to-gov't ecomerce already drawfs on-line sales to consumers and is expected to become 66% to 80% of ecommerce worldwide. Companies, such as Office Depot, have been participating in on-line sales to the government since before there was such a thing as Internet ecommerce. This started out as EDI purchasing systems (Electronic Data Interchange) but is now quickly migrating to the Internet as the universal media. The XML mark-up standard is also quickly evolving to provide a uniform convention for transmitting and parsing product and order data. I would be surprised if Amazon or Yahoo! and other cute darlings are very serious contenders in this rapidly emerging marketplace - they don't have the people or the experience to get up to speed as quickly as companies that have already been plugged into the process for years and that have huge product delivery and service pipelines already established and paid for.

Some of the ego bloated talk of Internet wonks who unthinkingly dismiss established companies is really funny, IMO.

Sure the web will change things, but many established companies are way ahead of the game in the biggest sector of all.
