You are correct about the Reagan abortion of the solar efforts. Of course, solar water heating was the only major part that was economically viable with reasonable subsidies. We do well in Hawaii (still have some power company and state subsidies and ideal weather for solar, but still in most of the mainland, solar is premature -- i.e. the economic costs of fossil fuel is still very low and solar technology still needs some major advances. In 10 years or so of advance in silicon technology solar electric roofing will do the job for home electricity needs.
