I just happened upon this thread yesterday, and I've read a couple of hundred posts. Most interesting. I think your point is well taken that the differences are irreconcilable.

Given that, I don't see the point of continuing to try to convince people who are not going to change their minds. A couple of years ago, the alarmist tack was arguably useful because it may have prodded some companies and governments into fixing the infrastructure. By now, everyone who's going to be working on the problem is already doing so, and they will either get the job done or they won't. The affect will either be a disaster or it will be trivial or it will be something in between.

At this point in the process, it does not seem helpful to increase the fear level among the civilians who have no role in the reprogramming. On the contrary, it seems to me that it's irresponsible. If every one of us takes the prudent and oft recommended steps of taking a few weeks or months worth of money out of the bank, topping off all our cars, etc., we can bring the system down even if not a single computer ends up failing. How ironic to be done in by the "exponential" effect of our reactions to the problem rather than by the problem itself!

Seems to me that it would be useful to argue less about the degree of risk and to think more about how we can react in a constructive way so we don't make things worse.
