From what I can tell 3G developed by Qcom, CDMA2000, will arrive very soon, the technology is ready but the customers cant make up their mind if its what they want. I think its a regulatory,ETSI, issue more then a completion of the technology. The Japenese would have begun their buildout of their next generation system if not for their concern about global adoption of standards. Although I dont know this as a fact, it is the way I interpret the news I have heard coming from Japan. In any case The technology is baisicly done.If you look back at Qcom Press releases it states completion of Cdma2000 ASIC as well as plans to run some upgraded IS95 systems regarding DATA. The 2 1/2 Generation systems will have equal Data rates to what Landline systems have now, and 3G , and the greater (HDR) packet data rates will be along as soon as Japan and Europe decide they want it.

There was a CDG conference with Perry laforge and Irwin Jacobs that discused the time element of high data rate applications for IS95 and CDMA2000. You might find it on the CDG web site, or search the Q board for links
