Hey Frank: Can't believe I am might have learned something before you have, but here goes.

The 3rd gen is at least a year and perhaps two away as far as the European initiative WCDMA is concerned - if it ever happens at all.

But and this is the big but, CDMA 2000 (which is the Qualcomm version of the 3rd gen) is moving through stages to readiness right now as I write.

The first step is an imporved data transmission system which uses the existing CDMA One installed system in Japan and the US for more rapid data transmission. This is a software only addition.

Next toward the end of this calendar year comes another more robust version for more rapid data still

Then in the first half of calendar 2000 the full CDMA 2000 3rd gen system will be available from the Q.

The ASICS and software for the 3rd gen CDMA 2000 system are being designed now and should be available in the first half of 2000. The actual installations in operating systems depend on the operators of course, but it looks like this is likely to happen first in Japan and perhaps second in the US

Others know much more about this than I do and assume they will comment and/or correct.

But I think the gist is correct.

Best.

Chaz.
