I agree that it is naive to be trusting of our elected (or, in the
case of AG, unelected) rulers, but what you described happens to
be the definition of cynicism. The cynic presupposes that human
action is guided by ulterior motives. Cynicism does not preclude
having a positive outlook or a happy life. I think that the term
'cynicism' has gotten a negative connotation by design... it is in
the interest of the ruling class for the masses to believe that
cynicism is harmful and divisive. It is only harmful and divisive
to those who are in a position to lose their power, of course.
