Sam,

Canada is a confederation. Always has been (as far as I recall).

Confederations are not federations. They are provinces/states that remain together for whatever period as it suits their best interests and thus, possess the right of self-determination should they choose.

In the US, we had the article of conferderation which failed miserably and were replaced by the US constitution establishing a federal govt.

I say let Quebec secede. We have room on our flag for a few more stars and then those guys won't have to use that monopoly money... <VBG>

Btw, a further analogy between Quebec and Taiwan is that both speak a different language than their leadership.

Chinese has an amazing number of dialects, while sharing the same written language. I've been told that many Chinese can't understand others from different parts of the country, the dialects are so different.

So we have to question just how "homogenous" the Chinese culture is if we have some many people who enunciate the written language so differently.
