MMW,

LU's negaive operating cash flow is worrisome. In particular, I was disturbed by the large increase in inventories and accounts receivable, which together increased by around 2.9BB during the first quarter. My off-hand observation is that LU has quite a bit of room from improvement in operations.

This is in sharp contrast to the kind of lean and mean manufacturing operation we see at Dell, and goes far to explain the reason why Dell has such a high ROIC and LU such a low ROIC.

would it be more accurate if you take YPEG of the industrial sector comparing against the security you are evaluating?

Perhaps. But if you think of a business as a black box why should you really care what the innerds are made of? Over time we see shifts in the relative P/E of various industry segments as they come in and out of fashion. But since I am investing in a particular stock (presumably for the long run), the approach of using a comparator to the segment has limited appeal. But I could be wrong. Remember, I have not back-tested this approach.
