It is correct. The "digital data" in this case is what comes from
your RS-232 port, or directly over the PC bus if you are using an
internal modem. It is not to be confused with the digital
representation of the data within the network. There is a layering
of functions. Think of it this way: You start with the ASCII data
in your PC. This gets packaged in a V.34 wrapper (digital to
analog, AKA modulation), which then gets packaged in a PCM wrapper
(analog to digital) and sent through the network. The network is
carrying a digital representation of an analog representation of
digital data.
